Pastors Weekly Message

Following Christ

If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death.

Growing in Faith

Our God of Second Chances

The bad news is that at some point in our lives—probably way more than we would like to admit—we are going to make choices that hurt our relationship with God. The good news is that our God is a God of forgiveness and second chances. Here are some suggestions for using God’s second chances in your own life.

Come to your senses. The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-52) left the embrace of his father and ruined himself with bad choices. He finally “came to his senses” and returned home. Realize and admit your own mistakes and come back to your Father’s embrace.

Avoid bad company. “Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly” (Proverbs 13:20). Surround yourself with people who will support your Gospel values.

Stay close. Closeness to God comes through prayer, Scripture study, regular Mass participation and living a Gospel-centered life.

Don’t give up. Jesus spent three years teaching twelve people how to live as his followers. They didn’t always get it right (and they lived with him!), but they kept trying. When you mess up, remember what Jesus said to the woman caught in the act of adultery. “Neither do I condemn you … from now on do not sin anymore” (John 8:11).Pick yourself up and start again.

Plant little seeds for God’s harvest

Bringing someone to God is rarely the result of just one person’s efforts on one particular day. Usually a series of people contribute over time. God uses each of us to plant seeds that eventually lead to a harvest of a soul. Here are some ways you can plant little seeds of faith each day:

Answer questions. A person seeking God may have lots of questions about him or what a relationship

with him is like. A great way to evangelize is to help find the answers. Keep a Bible and a Catechism handy for quick reference.

Walk away. Not everyone feels comfortable “counseling the sinner.” When friends or colleagues tell dirty jokes or gossip, your best option may be to walk away. If someone asks you why, take the opportunity to plant a seed of your faith.

Sponsor a Catholic school. Catholic schools are one of the most effective forms of evangelization, yet they usually have more needs than funds. Include your parish school or other local Catholic school on your regular list of charities to which you donate. What a great way to sew seeds of faith in the next generation.

Remind yourself daily of God’s love. When we are conscious of God’s peace and

presence in our lives, others will notice and want to share in it.

Don’t delay. Do it today.

In June we remember St. Norbert, a rich nobleman who loved his luxurious life so much that he ignored God’s call to become a priest. One day he was struck by lightening. After that, he became a priest, bishop and saint. What should you be doing for God that you’ve been putting off?

One Minute Meditation

Ask for Prudence

Prudence is the virtue that helps us to make the right choices. Practice prudence by praying before making decisions and asking advice of someone with more experience. The virtue of prudence isn’t

easy to acquire, but with God's help it makes doing the right thing a lot easier.

Easy Ways To Share Your Faith

There are people in our lives who may never read the Bible, rarely attend a church, and some who may never come to know God - unless we help them. Here are some suggestions for how you can share your gift of faith:

Give out holy gifts. Everyone loves a present. Make a practice of carrying medals, rosaries, pictures, and

prayer cards. Give them out freely to anyone who needs an extra boost.

Say only kind words. Mother Theresa said, “Let kindness be the first impression one has of you when they meet you, their thoughts of you when they’re with you and their last impression when they leave you.”

Welcome newcomers. Imagine how you would feel coming as a stranger to a new place - as Jesus did many times. Try to be patient with someone who isn’t a native English speaker or who may not be familiar with our culture.

Be a voice in the wilderness. When you notice an injustice, be the first one to speak out and take action. Treat all people with the dignity they deserve as children of God.

Give to Catholic organizations. Subscribe to the newspaper your diocese publishes. Support your local Catholic Charities office or a Catholic mission. These channels of evangelization truly need your support and prayers.
